Why Outdoor Free Play Builds Strong Bodies and Brains

In today’s busy world, toddlers often spend more time indoors than ever before. But unstructured outdoor play is one of the most powerful tools for supporting healthy development in early childhood. I highly encourage families who I work with to go outside every day, rain or shine! Being outside is so great for your child’s developing body for so many different reasons!

Why Outdoor Play Matters

When toddlers run, climb, dig, and explore, they’re building more than just muscle. Outdoor play strengthens:

  • Gross motor skills: Running, climbing, jumping, and balancing.
  • Fine motor skills: Picking up sticks, pouring sand, or drawing with chalk.
  • Sensory processing: Feeling grass, hearing birds, and moving in varied spaces.

The Benefits of Free Play

Unlike structured activities, free play gives toddlers the chance to make choices, solve problems, and test their limits. These moments build confidence and resilience while encouraging creativity.

Practical Ways to Encourage Outdoor Play

  • Visit a playground where your child can climb and slide.
  • Take walks and let your toddler set the pace.
  • Create a backyard obstacle course with pillows, tunnels, or chalk lines.
  • Offer safe tools like buckets, shovels, or balls for open-ended play.

Overcoming Common Barriers to Outdoor Play

Parents often worry about safety, weather, or time when it comes to outdoor play. The good news is that even small changes count. A few minutes in the backyard, a quick walk to the mailbox, or letting your toddler splash in puddles after rain all provide valuable motor experiences. On cold or rainy days, you can bring the outdoors inside by setting up a tent, sandbox bin, or “indoor park” with cushions and tunnels. The goal isn’t perfection — it’s simply creating more chances for your toddler to move freely in different environments.

GO OUTSIDE!

Outdoor play naturally builds the strength, balance, and coordination toddlers need to meet milestones. Please take your kiddos outside, rain or shine! You will ALL benefit from it 🙂
