As your baby reaches the 6-12 month mark, you’ll notice some truly exciting changes in their development! During this stage, your little one will go from rolling and sitting up to crawling, standing, and even taking their first steps. It’s an incredible time of growth as your baby gains more independence and begins to explore the world around them.

In this post, we’ll dive into the key milestones you can expect during these important months, along with tips on how to encourage and support their growth. Whether your baby is just starting to crawl or is already babbling and pulling up to stand, this stage is full of developmental breakthroughs that lay the foundation for their future achievements.

6 Months: Sitting Up and Reaching

Around 6 months, your baby will be able to sit up with little to no support. They will also start grabbing objects and passing them from hand to hand.

What to Expect:

  • Sitting up with support or briefly without.
  • Reaching and grabbing for toys.
  • Exploring textures by mouthing objects.

7–8 Months: Crawling and Understanding Cause and Effect

This is the age when many babies start crawling and exploring their environment more actively. They may also begin to understand basic cause-and-effect relationships, like realizing that dropping a toy causes it to fall.

What to Expect:

  • Crawling, either army-style or hands-and-knees.
  • Understanding cause-and-effect (e.g., shaking a rattle).
  • Responding to their name.

9–10 Months: Social Interaction and Object Permanence

Around this time, your baby will start showing more complex social behaviors, like waving and clapping. They’ll also begin to understand object permanence, meaning they know objects still exist even when they’re out of sight.

What to Expect:

  • Waving, clapping, and pointing.
  • Playing peek-a-boo.
  • Standing with support or cruising along furniture.

11–12 Months: Walking and Saying First Words

At the one-year mark, many babies will take their first steps. Some may even say their first word like “mama” or “dada.”

What to Expect:

  • Walking or taking first steps.
  • Saying their first words.
  • Beginning to show clear preferences (e.g., favorite toys or people).

The 6-12 month stage is filled with exciting milestones as your baby begins to explore the world around them, from crawling to walking and even saying their first words. While every baby develops uniquely, these milestones give you a solid framework for tracking your baby’s progress. If you have concerns about delays or development, don’t hesitate to reach out for a consultation. Early intervention can make a big difference in supporting your baby’s growth.

In the meantime, keep encouraging your baby with safe spaces for exploration, toys that promote motor skills, and plenty of interaction. They’re growing fast, and each new milestone is a step toward their independence!
