Key Developmental Milestones for Your Baby: 0-6 months

As a new parent, it’s completely normal to wonder if your baby is developing on track. You might worry if they’re meeting milestones, such as holding their head up or starting to crawl. These concerns are common, but the truth is, every baby develops at their own pace. However, knowing the typical developmental milestones can help you track your baby’s progress and give you peace of mind.

Here are key milestones you can expect in the first six months of your baby’s life.

1. First Few Weeks: Reflexes and Early Bonding

In the first few weeks, your newborn will rely on reflexes like sucking and rooting for feeding, as well as grasping and startle reflexes. These reflexes help your baby feel secure and comfortable as well as help start to teach the baby’s body how to move.

What to Expect:

  • Rooting and sucking reflexes.
  • Hands may make a “grasping” motion when you touch their palms.
  • Babies may start to make eye contact, which is the first step toward bonding.

2. 1–2 Months: Head Control and Smiling

By the second month, your baby will begin to hold their head up for short periods when placed on their tummy. You may also notice their first social smile—a sign that they’re starting to engage with you.

What to Expect:

  • Holding head up during tummy time.
  • Smiling in response to faces or sounds.
  • Beginning to track objects with their eyes.

3. 3–4 Months: Strengthening Muscles

During this phase, your baby will develop stronger neck, back, and arm muscles, which will help with rolling over. You’ll also hear your baby starting to coo or babble as they experiment with sounds.

What to Expect:

  • Rolling from tummy to back.
  • Reaching for toys or objects.
  • Babbling and cooing.

4. 5–6 Months: Sitting Up and Reaching

Around 6 months, your baby will be able to sit up with little to no support. They will also start grabbing objects and passing them from hand to hand.

What to Expect:

  • Sitting up with support or briefly without.
  • Reaching and grabbing for toys.
  • Exploring textures by mouthing objects.

Tracking your baby’s milestones during their first 6 months can help you understand their growth and development. Remember, every baby develops at their own pace, and slight variations in the timeline are perfectly normal. However, if you notice your baby struggling with any of the key milestones, such as difficulty holding their head up or limited social engagement, it may be helpful to consult with a pediatrician or pediatric physical therapist.

As your baby grows, continue to support their development with plenty of tummy time, stimulating activities, and lots of love. In the next post, we’ll dive into what you can expect as your baby moves into the 6-12 month stage and reaches even more exciting milestones!
