Playground Confidence: Building Strength Through Play

I absolutely love when I see playgrounds full of kids playing! It makes me so happy to know that they are out there having fun, learning, growing, and getting stronger! Playground play is powerful motor development in action!

Climbing, jumping, and swinging build:

  • Core strength
  • Balance and coordination
  • Grip and upper body strength
  • Confidence in movement

Not all kids take to the playground naturally. Some avoid climbing or seem unsure. Others have poor coordination or fall often. That’s where targeted movement play comes in!

Simple ways to support playground readiness:

  • Practice balancing on curbs or tape lines
  • Encourage climbing stairs with alternating feet
  • Try obstacle courses at home with pillows and furniture
  • Play animal walks: bear crawl, crab walk, or frog jump

And if your child avoids physical play or seems fearful of movement, it might be worth chatting with a pediatric PT. We help kids build strength and bravery in their bodies. The goal isn’t just stronger muscles—it’s joyful movement and confidence in their growing abilities.
