When we all learn new motor skills, we’re a little more uncoordinated. The same holds true for toddlers, and just think about how much they’re learning at this age! They sometimes seemingly trip over nothing, fall flat mid-run, and sometimes fall down for no reason at all. So, is it normal clumsiness—or something to watch?
The short answer: Some falling is totally normal. Toddlers are learning to balance their quickly growing bodies while running, climbing, and exploring new terrain.
If you notice things like:
- Frequent falls when walking on flat ground
- Difficulty standing up from the floor without using hands
- Trouble climbing stairs or getting off the couch
- Tripping over their own feet often
…it could be a sign they need a little help with strength, coordination, or sensory input. A pediatric physical therapist can assess your toddler’s movement, posture, and balance to see what’s typical and what might benefit from extra support.
Clumsiness isn’t always just a phase—but it doesn’t mean something is wrong either. Sometimes, toddlers just need a little help learning how to move with control and confidence.
