If the words “tummy time” make you feel stressed, you’re not alone. Some newborns don’t mind tummy time and others act like it’s the most offensive thing ever invented! No matter which way your baby is, tummy time is super important for so many different reasons, and it’s a must to start it early, even in those first few days home! The good news is that tummy time doesn’t need to be long, intense, or miserable, and it can actually be quite fun!
Tummy time is simply time spent on your baby’s belly while they’re awake and supervised. It helps strengthen neck, shoulder, and core muscles—basically, all the building blocks for rolling, sitting, crawling, and eventually walking.
Start small: Just 1–2 minutes after diaper changes is a great way to sneak it in throughout the day. Lay baby on a soft but firm surface, use a rolled towel under their chest, or do it skin-to-skin by lying back and placing baby on your chest. Bonus: they’ll work harder to lift that adorable head just to look at you!
Make it fun: Use mirrors, colorful toys, or your own silly face. Singing or narrating what you’re doing helps, too. Even if they fuss a bit, try and figure out how much to encourage them and when to give them a break.
If your baby really struggles with tummy time, try starting on your lap or chest where they feel more secure. Over time, you’ll build both their strength and their confidence.
You’re not failing if your baby only tolerates a few seconds at a time. Progress is progress. A few minutes a day can add up to huge developmental gains. Just one little push-up at a time 😉
